The Partner You Choose Can Make or Break Your Business

The Partner You Choose Can Make or Break Your Business
(Why Most Partnerships Fail in the Philippines)
Let’s be honest:
****Walang negosyo ang nasira dahil sa produkto —****pero maraming negosyo ang nasira dahil sa partner.
In my 35 years of working with Filipino entrepreneurs, I’ve seen partnerships that:
✔ grew fast
✔ scaled nationwide
✔ lasted for years
But I’ve also seen partnerships that ended with:
❌ lawsuits
❌ broken friendships
❌ family conflict
❌ stress
❌ financial disaster
And many of these failures were predictable.
You can see the red flags early —
but entrepreneurs ignore them.
Let’s talk about the truths most people avoid.
❗ 1️⃣ You Choose a Partner Because You’re Close — Not Because You’re Compatible
The most common mistake:
“Magkakaibigan naman kami.”
“Magkakamag-anak kami.”
“Sabay kami nangarap.”
But friendship ≠ partnership.
Family ≠ compatibility.
Dreams ≠ discipline.
Business requires:
✔ skills
✔ responsibility
✔ accountability
✔ financial discipline
✔ aligned values
Hindi sapat ang closeness.
Kailangan ng competence.
❗ 2️⃣ You Have Different Levels of Commitment
One partner:
→ all-in
→ full-time
→ hands-on
→ invested emotionally, physically, financially
The other partner:
→ busy
→ distracted
→ may ibang priorities
→ hindi nagco-communicate
This imbalance ALWAYS leads to resentment.
Business partnerships fail when one person carries the weight of two.
❗ 3️⃣ You Avoid Talking About Money
Filipinos dislike discussing money —
until it becomes a problem.
Important questions you MUST ask before starting:
- How much will each of us invest?
- What is our salary?
- Sino ang may access sa pera?
- How do we share profit?
- Who approves expenses?
- Paano kung may loss?
If you don’t talk money early,
you will fight about it later.
❗ 4️⃣ No Written Agreement — “Usap-Usapan Lang”
This is the most dangerous.
80% of ruined partnerships I’ve seen
started with one line:
“Verbal agreement lang kami.”
A partnership without a contract
is a breakup waiting to happen.
Write it.
Sign it.
Protect it.
Even if you’re family.
❗ 5️⃣ One Partner Thinks They’re “More Important”
Signs of ego problems:
- “Ako nagkaroon ng idea.”
- “Ako mas marami nagawa.”
- “Ako kaya ang boss dito.”
- “Ako ang reason bakit may customers.”
When the ego enters,
trust exits.
Partnership is not a fight for the spotlight.
It’s a shared mission.
💡 The Partner You Choose Will Determine Your Destiny
A good partner will:
✔ support you
✔ balance you
✔ challenge you
✔ protect you
✔ help you grow
A bad partner will:
❌ drain you
❌ sabotage you
❌ stress you
❌ block your progress
❌ destroy everything you worked for
Be wise, not emotional.
👉 What I, as a Business Mentor with 35 Years Experience, Would Think and Recommend
After decades of guiding entrepreneurs nationwide, here’s my strongest advice:
✔ Do NOT choose a partner out of convenience
✔ Create a clear, signed partnership agreement
✔ Assign roles based on strengths, not emotions
✔ Set rules for money, approval, and accountability
✔ Schedule regular check-ins and honest discussions
✔ Identify compatibility beyond friendship
✔ Protect the partnership with structure and boundaries
And most importantly:
****If you have doubts about the person,****don’t partner — hire them instead.
Your business is too important
to risk on the wrong person.
