5 Ways to Decide — Invest, Scale Up, or Stay Status Quo in a Tough Economy

I get this question a lot these days: “Butz, dapat ba akong mag-expand, or better I just hold the line muna?” It’s a fair question. When prices are up, consumers are more careful, and every peso feels heavier — the instinct to freeze is natural. But freezing isn’t always safety. Sometimes it’s the slowest way to fall behind.
After three decades of building franchise systems through recessions, crises, and everything in between, here are five ways I help owners decide what to do next.
- Check your cash runway, not your excitement.
Before anything else, ask: if income dropped 20% tomorrow, how many months could you survive? If the answer is under six months, this isn’t the season to scale — it’s the season to strengthen. Excitement about an opportunity should never override the math of survival. - Look at what’s actually driving your revenue.
Is your growth coming from real repeat customers, or from one-time promos and discounts? A business propped up by promos isn’t ready to scale — it’s still finding its footing. Scale only what’s proven to hold weight on its own. - Test small before you commit big.
You don’t need a big bang expansion to know if the market wants more of you. Open one more branch, not five. Add one new product line, not ten. Let the results — not your hopes — tell you if it’s time to go bigger. - Study what your competitors are doing — but don’t copy their panic or their bravado.
In hard times, some businesses retreat completely, others overextend trying to prove they’re fine. Neither is a strategy. Watch the market, but make your decision based on your own numbers and your own capacity to execute well. - Ask if status quo is really safety, or just familiar fear.
Sometimes “let’s just maintain” is wise patience. Other times, it’s fear wearing the mask of prudence. I’ve mentored owners who stayed status quo for years out of caution, only to watch competitors who invested wisely pull far ahead. Be honest with yourself about which one you’re doing.
I always tell my mentees: hard economic times don’t punish businesses for moving — they punish businesses for moving blindly, or for not moving at all when the numbers clearly said go. Whatever you decide, decide with your eyes open.
If you’re wrestling with this decision right now, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Let GMB Franchise Developers help you look at the numbers clearly and build a plan that fits your reality.
