Kamag-Anak Discount Culture — The Silent Killer of Filipino Businesses

Kamag-Anak Discount Culture — The Silent Killer of Filipino Businesses
“Pamilya naman eh…” — The Most Dangerous Line in Business
Sa Pilipinas, normal na ang humingi ng family discount, “pa-bawas naman,” o “libre na ‘yan!”
Pero ang hindi alam ng marami:
👉 Every discount you give affects your inventory.
👉 Every freebie reduces your profit.
👉 Every ‘pa-utang muna’ affects your cash flow.
Hindi masama tumulong.
Pero masama kung ikaw ang nawawalan para lang mapasaya ang iba.
❗ Why the “Kamag-Anak Discount Culture” Is Dangerous
1️⃣ It Trains People to Devalue Your Business
Para bang:
“Negosyo mo lang naman, libre yan.”
You’re unintentionally teaching them that your products have no full value.
2️⃣ They Expect It Every Time
The more discounts you give,
the more discounts they expect.
3️⃣ Your Business Pays for Their Savings
When you give 20% discount,
YOU actually lose 20% from your margin.
4️⃣ It Creates an Unhealthy Power Dynamic
Kapag hindi mo binigay?
Ikaw pa ang masama.
5️⃣ It Hurts Your Employees
Every discount affects their hours, stock, and workload.
They suffer for a privilege they didn’t ask for.
❗Who Are the “Discount Hunters” in the Family?
1️⃣ The ‘Lapit Ka Lang Sa Akin’ Tita
Always asking for freebies.
Never buys full price.
2️⃣ The ‘Supporter’ Who Never Actually Buys
Laging nagco-comment ng “Congrats!”
Pero never bumili.
3️⃣ The Event Freebie Hunter
“May birthday kami. Libreng tray naman d’yan.”
4️⃣ The Secret Reseller
Humihingi ng discount tapos binebenta ulit.
5️⃣ The Guilt-Tripper
“Ayaw mo? Pamilya tayo!”
💡 How to Protect Your Business Without Being “Masama”
1️⃣ Offer a Standard Family Rate (Fixed)
Example:
Maximum 10% only
Clear. Professional. Fair.
2️⃣ Have a “No Discount During Peak Season” Rule
Non-negotiable.
Busy = no freebies.
3️⃣ If They Insist, Offer Value Instead of Discount
- Free eco-bag
- Free small add-on
- Free note card
Pero wag masira ang pricing structure.
4️⃣ Teach Them the Truth
“Hindi ako tumatanggi dahil kuripot ako…
tumatanggi ako dahil responsible akong may-ari.”
5️⃣ Give “Support Prices,” Not “Family Prices”
Support means BUYING, not FREE.
👉 What I, as a Business Mentor with 35 Years Experience, Would Think and Recommend
In my 35 years working with entrepreneurs, I’ve seen too many MSMEs die not because of competition…
but because of family discount pressure.
My advice:
✔ Don’t apologize for protecting your business.
✔ Don’t be scared to say “May policy kami.”
✔ Don’t let guilt dictate your pricing.
✔ Don’t discount your way to failure.
A business can only serve family IF IT SURVIVES.
Don’t give discounts that slowly kill the dream you worked hard to build.
