Why Your Business Struggles: Leadership Problem PH

By Butz Bartolome ·

Your Business Isn’t Struggling — You’re Just Too Hard to Work With

(The painful truth about business owners who drive good people away)

Most entrepreneurs think their business problems come from:

“Walang maayos na staff.”
“Walang malasakit.”
“Walang diskarte.”
“Walang initiative.”

But after 35 years mentoring MSMEs,
here’s a truth many owners don’t want to hear:

Your business isn’t struggling because of your people.Your business is struggling because you’re too difficult to work with.

Hard truth? Yes.
Necessary truth? Absolutely.

Let’s talk about why good businesses fail —
not because of bad employees,
but because of the owner’s own behavior.

❗ 1️⃣ You Don’t Trust Anyone Except Yourself

You hired people…
but you don’t let them decide.

You want to control:

  • every purchase
  • every decision
  • every mistake
  • every customer
  • every small detail

This mindset suffocates your team.

****Control feels safe to the owner,****but it kills initiative in your staff.

❗ 2️⃣ You Change Rules Depending on Your Mood

Yesterday: “Okay ’yan.”
Today: “Bakit mo ginawa ’yan?”
Tomorrow: “Wala kang common sense.”

Employees are not mind readers.
Consistency builds trust.
Inconsistency builds fear.

****People don’t leave jobs.****They leave unpredictable bosses.

❗ 3️⃣ You Criticize More Than You Teach

Feedback is good.
Pero kung puro mali ang hinahanap mo…

…your staff will stop trying.

  • No acknowledgement
  • No appreciation
  • No guidance
  • No positive reinforcement

Hard truth:

You cannot expect excellence from people you only criticize.

❗ 4️⃣ You Don’t Pay for Skills — But Expect High Performance

“Mataas na sweldo yan.”
“Entry-level lang.”
“Kaya na yan ng OJT.”

But you want:

  • professional results
  • advanced skills
  • quick learning
  • leadership qualities
  • loyalty

Hindi pwede.

You get the level of staff you are willing to invest in.

❗ 5️⃣ You Refuse to Delegate

Because:

“Mas mabilis ako.”
“Hindi niya magagawa nang tama.”
“Ako na lang.”

This behavior destroys your business.

Why?

Because you become the bottleneck.

Delegation is not losing control.
Delegation is gaining capacity.

❗ 6️⃣ You Don’t Listen — You Dictate

Your staff suggests improvements.

“Hindi pwede.”
“Huwag na.”
“Dati pa naming ginagawa ’yan.”

Then you wonder why no one takes initiative anymore.

When owners stop listening, teams stop caring.

❗ 7️⃣ You Don’t Communicate Your Vision

Your staff is working day to day,
pero ikaw may pangarap:

  • more branches
  • franchise model
  • bigger income
  • new products

Pero kung walang direction,
employees will only work,
not believe.

People follow leaders with clarity — not leaders with pressure.

👉 What I, as a Business Mentor with 35 Years Experience, Would Think and Recommend

Over the past three decades, I’ve seen more businesses fail from leadership problems than from financial problems.

Here’s my advice:

✔ If your staff keeps leaving — reflect, don’t react
✔ Train people, don’t blame them
✔ Delegate small tasks first, then bigger ones
✔ Build systems so people are not guessing
✔ Give credit publicly, correct privately
✔ Reward initiative
✔ Communicate your expectations clearly
✔ Appreciate your team more

And most importantly:

****Your business reflects your leadership.****If you want better people, be a better leader.

Growth doesn’t start with your staff.
Growth starts with YOU.
