The Relative Who Wants a Share Even If They Didn’t Help

(The Truth About Entitlement in Filipino Family Businesses)

The Most Annoying Line Entrepreneurs Hear:

“May ambag ako d’yan!”

Pero nung nagsisimula ka?
Wala.
Tahimik.
Hindi tumulong.
Hindi nag-invest.
Hindi nagbenta.
Hindi nagbantay.
Hindi nagpuyat.

Pero ngayon na kumikita na?
Biglang may “share” sila.

This — THIS — is one of the biggest problems in Filipino entrepreneurship.

❗ Why Do Some Relatives Feel Entitled?

1️⃣ Proximity Theory

“Magkakamag-anak tayo, so may karapatan ako.”

Family = automatic ownership?
Of course not.

2️⃣ Shared Surname = Shared Assets

May mga kamag-anak na feeling:
“Apelyido natin ‘yan, so akin din ‘yan.”

Business is built by WORK, not SURNAME.

3️⃣ They Only See Success, Not Sacrifice

Nakikita nila:
✔ store
✔ branding
✔ customers
✔ sales

Hindi nila nakita:
❌ puyat
❌ utang
❌ risk
❌ sleepless nights
❌ failures
❌ sacrifice

4️⃣ They Think Family Means Free Access

“Family ako, bigyan mo ko ng cut.”

Ganun lang?

❗ The Damage Caused by Entitled Relatives

🔥 Creates Tension

Family gatherings turn into board meetings.

🔥 Destroys Respect

They don’t respect the business process.

🔥 Disrupts Operations

Sila pa ang nagagalit kung di mo binigay ang gusto nila.

🔥 Can Cause “Silent Sabotage”

Backstabbing.
Chismis.
Comparisons.
Emotional guilt.

The emotional stress is REAL.

💡 How to Deal With Entitled Relatives (Without Starting World War III)

1️⃣ Establish CLEAR Ownership Papers

Walang papel = walang share. Period.

2️⃣ Create a Business Org Chart

Para klaro:
Sino ang may role?
Sino ang wala?

3️⃣ The Magic Line:

“I love you, but this business has structure.”

Respect + firmness.

4️⃣ Only Give Shares to Contributors

Hindi pwede ang “feelings-based ownership.”
Contribution-based only.

5️⃣ Protect Yourself With Boundaries

Hindi ka masama.
You’re being responsible.

👉 What I, as a Business Mentor with 35 Years Experience, Would Think and Recommend

For 35 years, I’ve seen businesses fall apart because of entitled family members who want a piece of the pie they never helped bake.

My strongest advice:

✔ Never reward the loudest relative — reward the one who truly contributes.
✔ Business is built with sacrifice, not emotion.
✔ Ownership should be earned, not demanded.
✔ Don’t let guilt force you into giving what they didn’t work for.

****Your success is not their entitlement.****Your sacrifice is not their shortcut.
