  Why Your Business Isn’t Growing

By Butz Bartolome ·

You wake up before everyone else. You close up after everyone leaves. You handle the suppliers, the staff, the customers, and the cash flow — sometimes all in the same hour. You are, without question, one of the hardest-working people in the room.

So why does it feel like your business isn’t moving forward?

Here’s something I’ve learned in over 35 years of working with Filipino entrepreneurs: the problem is almost never effort. The problem is almost always structure.

When I started GMB Franchise Developers in 1991, I saw the same struggle in every entrepreneur I mentored. They had great products. They had loyal customers. They had fire in their hearts. But they were the bottleneck in their own business. Every decision ran through them. Every problem landed on their desk. The business could not breathe — let alone grow — without them physically present.

That is not a scaling business. That is a very exhausting self-employment.

Scaling requires a shift in how you think about your role. You have to stop being the worker and start being the architect. Your job is no longer to do everything — it’s to design a business that does everything, with or without you.

That means documenting your processes so that anyone on your team can follow them. It means training people to make decisions in your absence. It means building a structure that can be replicated — branch by branch, location by location — without your personal touch being the only thing holding it together.

I’ve walked this road with hundreds of business owners across the Philippines. A carenderia owner who turned one stall into a franchise chain. A laundry shop operator who went from doing everything herself to managing five branches with a team. A service provider who finally took a vacation — and came back to a business that was still standing.

None of them were smarter than you. None of them had more money than you. What they had was a mentor and a system.

If you’re ready to stop running in place and start building something that grows, I’m here to help.
